Farewell to a faithful postman, who retired on 28th May 2004

Our cheerful postman, Roy Norman making an early morning delivery in Chelmer Avenue.

Roy started working for the Post Office some thirty years ago and for the past twenty-five has been arriving at the Sorting Office at around 5 a.m. in order to prepare the mail.  He gets to Little Waltham around 7 a.m. and literally come rain, hail or snow begins his trek, finishing at about mid-day.

Roy kept an eye on everyone, especially the old 'uns just to make sure that all is well.  Thanks to his knowledge of all of us, poorly addressed letters still managed to got to their correct destination (and I should know).

I haven't asked how many letter boxes he visited each day on average, but if we suppose 200 and if it involves only105 feet from one box to the next, my calculator says this meant 4 miles of trudge/dash. If there are 300 letter boxes, the distance rises to 6 miles.

As Roy came down Chapel Drive on 28th May, did he suspect that something might be about to happen outside no.21?

Soon, others came out of the woodwork

Iris Diver watched by Evelyn Bolton,  presented Roy with a folder carrying good will messages and 'tokens of appreciation' from inhabitants of the village.

Did she say
 "Roy Norman -
  This is your life!"
?

All good wishes to you Roy, with many thanks from Little Waltham.
