The
Memorial Hall was built in 1924. It and the War Memorial
near the river bridge were the culminations of donations raised to
commemorate the dead of the 1914-1918 war. Subsequently,
names relating to the 1939-1945 war were added.
Between the two wars, the Hall was much used by The Royal British
Legion, but in the 1960s there was a relentless decline in numbers
until around 1971. It was then that an enterprising
lady, the then chairman of the Parish Council thought to put on a
pantomime to encourage more of the general public to see inside
the Hall, for it was getting into a rather poor condition and its
possible demolition was being considered. The pantomime was a
success and the Drama Group flourishes
to this day along with the Gardening Club, Pre-school, Toddler
Group, Brownies, Good Companions, Carpet Bowls, Yoga and a
revived Royal British Legion (both mens' and womens'
sections).
