All credit to the volunteers who maintain the grounds of St. Martin's Church in such good condition :

IM000191.JPG (32009 bytes)When visiting  my Husbands grave in your beautiful church I took this picture.  It was two weeks ago but as you can see it was a lovely day the birds where singing.
What a credit the churchyard is to those who maintain it.
A piece of heaven on earth.

If you use the Car Park behind the Memorial Hall, read the notice there, pinned up on one of the telegraph poles.

In their wisdom, the Chelmsford Borough Council is proposing to make it an offence to park your vehicle in a C.B.C. Public Car Park other than within the marker lines.  There is the possibility of a £60 fine.
You have until 17th Feb. 2005 to object to the proposed order.

Rather than risk this, it seems that you would do better cluttering up the main road where there is no such constraint and no such threat.

Readers may note that Phuket was an island badly affected by the Christmas earthquake / tidal wave in the Indian Ocean.  Happily, I understand that Jiem is O.K.  Indeed, he was extremely lucky, having been on the beach only 15 minutes before the wave struck.

I would like to say hello to everyone in Little Waltham especially my wife.
I'm going to visit her next month after being apart for 10 months.  I'm so surprised

 sounds very friendly.

I wish to be a part of the community for about two months.

Thank you so much.

Are you – or do you know of anyone – (who is) able to provide me with a brief history of the church? I am engaged in a project with my grandfather ( Mr Richard ( Dick ) Balfour ) and it would be useful if I could have something, the sooner the better, really, if you would be so kind…

Thanks very much

Please does anyone have any info on a place called The Retreat
or the owners George & Annie Stewart or their family.
My Mum lived there for a short time around 1925, attending the
village school for a while. Believe Annie was distantly related to
my Mum's mother, possibly a tea room of sorts with pool table
for the gentlemen. Know it's asking a lot after all this time, but
would be grateful for any info.

Yours truly

Ann

My name is Albert Troy Lively, Jr.  I live in Houston, Texas, USA as do my parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.T.Lively, Sr.  My dad was a member of the American 394th Bomber Group  and flew from Boreham Field during the war.
All of my life, I have heard nothing but praise and admiration for the citizens of England and also a bit of awe and reverence in his opinions and feelings for the R.A.F. pilots during your struggle in WWII.  Now, to see the memorial and the Remembrance service for our pilots generates the finest feelings in my heart for your country.  What class!
Even though my father is unable to communicate with you, I'm sure that I speak for him when I render a heart-felt Thank You for all that your country has done in the memory of the 394th.
If possible, I would like to communicate with someone in your area by email.

Again, thank you very much for your thoughts and kindness.  They are in short supply in this world of ours today.
Sincerely,  Troy Lively
In no  time at all after printing the above request, Troy has been contacted by several people.
To one of these he has replied :

Dear Mr. Elliott,
I have been contacted over the years by various people that knew my dad during the war and it is always a pleasure to read what those people remember about the aircraft, the country itself, others in the Air Corps and historic details like those in your letter.  The 394th group made a trip to England about 5-6 years ago and my dad expressed the desire to see the place again but at that time, his physical condition prohibited his traveling.  His condition has worsened since then and his memory is about gone.  One of the few things that he remembers clearly is his time in England and the kind people that he met there.  Please keep in touch with me and I will relay any messages to my dad.  Feel free to give my email address to anyone that would like to have it.  I will reply to all email messages.  Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to respond to my request.  I look forward to future communications.

Troy Lively, Jr.

Subject: Bus shelter!
Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003

Dear members of the parish council,
I would like to express my opinion about the Ash Tree corner bus shelter on Main road. Lots of children, including my sister and I, have to wait at the bus shelter every morning to catch a bus to get to school. It is rather unpleasant to stand by  because it smells awful and there is graffiti on the inside. The purpose of a bus shelter is to stand in to stop the wind making you cold, and if you are waiting for a long time to sit down in, at the moment it is serving neither purpose because nobody will stand in it let alone sit in it, because of the stench. A little while ago a tramp decided to sleep in there and went to the toilet in there! There have been two other occasions when different people have gone to the toilet in there and because it never gets cleaned the smell still remains. I know we are lucky we even have a bus shelter and I am aware that other bus stops don't have them, for example the bus stop on the Hospital Approach, but in my opinion, having a bus stop that smells so much might as well not be there because we don't use it because it is so disgusting. The bus stop at the end of Court Road has a glass sided bus shelter that stops the wind and still enables you to see the bus when it comes. I do know of the problems with vandalism, but most of it is done by gangs, and they mostly hang around in small roads or parks, not usually on main roads. Please build us a new bus shelter!!
Now I have put foward my point of view it is up to you.

Please consider my opinion.
Yours sincerely Lauren Weavers age 12.

I have just read the chit-chat dated 2 december on this subject.
For those who don't already know, the occupants of this field were served an enforcement order over 12 months ago, and legal injunctions in September, October and February to clear the site. They have ignored everything.
To press Chelmsford Borough Council to get on with it, contact the enforcement officer, Christine Lyons on 606211 or christine.lyons@chelmsfordbc.gov.uk.

Hello,
My name is James Simon.

I used to live in the village from 1987-1993 when we moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. My mum and dad, Dennis and Denise owned the post office and general store. I am trying to find my old friends from school, to name a couple Paul Wells , Richard Salmon , Simon Marriott , Ben Jones ,  Adam Quilter , James Hickman , Sally Rogers , Layra Ketley , Emma and James Fleetwood and any one else who I knew. I really hope to hear back from you as I often think of you all.

Hello!

My name is Michelle Mallord (nee Benson).  I lived in Roman Road in the 70's and early 80's with my mum Yvonne Benson and my grandparents Reg and Phyllis Tyler.   I attended Little Waltham Primary School between 1974 and 1981 before moving on to Chelmer Valley High School.

It would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me and my family.  I now live in Scotland and don't get back to Essex as much as I would like.

This web site is excellent!!!  It has really brought back some good childhood memories. I have also seen a few familiar names here too!
